China's Ad Industry Sprints for the Olympic Finish Line Look Back 2008 The "next big thing" in advertising is half a world away from Madison Avenue. On the eve of the 2008 Olympics, large, vibrant LED displays - many carrying full-motion advertising - are reaching millions of Chinese consumers as they flex billions of dollars worth of newfound spending power. In China's largest cities next month, Beijing pedestrians will watch the Olympic Games on thousands of LED ad panels operated by Hong Kong-based Network CN, Inc., which will provide exclusive Olympics out-of-home coverage on its six-city network. Between events, and daily, these panels will display ads promoting Western brands to the world's largest emerging consumer market. Sprinting ahead of other media, out-of-home advertising in China is expected to grow 28% cumulatively between 2008 and 2012. In China's middle-class demographic segment, incomes are rising by 20% annually, but penetration by such 20th-century media staples as in-home TV spots and newspaper ads lags the U.S. and Europe. Advertisers currently spend only $1 per month per Chinese consumer; only 2% to 3% of the U.S. ad spend. Out-of-home media is helping advertisers to "plug the gap" between China's nascent urban TV audience and the 80% of the Chinese population not yet on the Internet. For example, after the Sichuan earthquake, Network CN management donated time on the company's network to broadcast earthquake news and donation information as a much-needed public service. With the designated promoter of the Olympics, Network CN is operating 11,000 in-building LCD screens in governmental and office buildings, banks, hotels, hospitals and stadiums throughout 2008. Network CN also operates 197 out-of-home displays, as well as 98 light boxes at the Beijing Airport's new international Terminal 3. The network covers the Olympic cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Qingdao, as well as upscale Wuhan, Nanjing and Hangzhou. Network CN currently counts among its clients Olympic partners Visa, McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Lenovo and Adidas, plus other global marquee brands that include General Electric, Mercedes Benz, Shiseido, Nike and Siemens.
